The Status of Clear Creek ISD

I spent most of the morning in an administrator meeting, which was both informative and emotional. In our meeting, Dr. Smith said he was faced with the following questions:

If CCISD was to reopen on Monday the 22nd....
1. Would all CCISD buildings be safe? NO
2. Would all CCISD buildings have electricity? NO
3. Would all debris be removed from school sites and roads, making travel safe? NO
4. Would all staff be ready to report? NO

CCISD will reopen for students on September 29. Teachers report on Spetember 26. Adminsitrators are already back.

Currently, 7 CCISD buildings are not safe for students, Bauerschlag being one of them. 7 other campuses have no power. Most of the food stored for school lunches and breakfast was lost. 50o CCISD staff members have not been reached. We remain hopeful that there is a gap in communication, but are cautious that there may be a few tragic situations. Many CCISD staff members sustained major loss during the storm. In the administrator meeting, the head of building maintenance, a principal and an assistant principal all indicated that they no longer have a home (you can guess how emotional that part of the meeting was).

The commissioner will rule on how many days will be waived for make-up. For Rita, they allowed 10. We are looking at 13. The board will meet on Monday to determine if we will be paid for the days off.

In the Seabrook and Kemah areas, the "locals" are frazzled to say the least. The kids are running around, the adults are not thinking straight (let your imaginations run wild...it is probably a pretty accurate assumption). The elementary school down there (which surprisingly suffered very little damage) opened its gym as a safe palce for kids to go. CCISD staff members volunteered to go and monitor students. Project CRAYON has been established to provide students with clothing and school supplies. I will be happy to share information on this if you are interested.

As far as Bauerschlag goes, the school suffered major roof damage. We had standing water in the gym and cafeteria. Several rooms had ceiling tile down and water damage. We lost one Kindergarten classroom and the music room. There are roofing materials and debris littering the grounds. A professional cleaning/restoration crew will come in to repair our building. It is super stinky. The offfice area is good - doesn't smell at all - which is good for the baby and me.

While we prepare for displaced students to arrive at our doors, we must realize that they are now deemed "homeless." This offers them a great deal of assistance, and means paperwork for us (not a problem, just a red tape inconvenience). The one thing that really got to me today was that it isn't just our students who are now displaced....it is our staff....our family members....our friends....

On my drive in to work this morning, I heard the following words to a song:

"Oh God, my God, I cry out. Your beloved needs you now."

I pray that God wrap His arms around this area - they need Him. I pray that He give the CCISD administrators the wisdom and discernment that we need to lead this distrinct during these troubled times. I pray that we are able to reach out to those in need, and that any who let foolish pride keep them from expressing loss and need be revealed to us.
